Whose Voice Do You Listen To?

By Jenni Schubring, Director of Womenβs Ministries
Whose voice do you listen to?
Maybe we should start by identifying some of the different voices that are out there. Who influences what you think or say?
Our parents
Our children
Our church leaders
Our friends
Our neighbors
The news
And how many different voices are sitting right there in our pockets through social media?
My guess is that you could name a few more voices that have your ear.
But here's a question I've been thinking about:
What voices are the loudest?
What voices influence how you think...
about the world?
about others?
about youself?
Why does this matter?
If you're like me, you tend to listen to other voices more than God's voice.
Allow me to call us both out. This can be a form of idolatry.
So, what does God say?
What does God say about the world?
- "The earth is the Lordβs, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it." Psalm 24:1
- "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33
What does God say about others?
- βPeople look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.β 1 Samuel 16:7
- β... in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.β Philippians 2:4
What does God say about you?
- βMy grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.β 2 Corinthians 12:9
- βFor you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my motherβs womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.β Psalm 139:3-4
There is so much more scripture that could be added to these categories, but I just wanted to give you a taste. You see, God is love. So when we listen to HIS voice, we get to experience HIS love over and over and over again.
His love never ends.
And when we do fall into the idolatry of putting other voices first, we don't have to stay there. We get to trust in the resurrection of Jesus and stand on the promises of Psalm 103. Go ahead and look that one up. But here's a teaser:
βAs far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.β
Now that's a voice I want to listen to.
